If you have a massive wall of text, a long article, or a big list of items, you often need to cut it down to fit a specific space. Doing this by hand is frustrating and takes too much time, especially when you need to hit an exact character or word count. That is why I built this advanced text truncator. It helps you quickly shorten text online and add a clean ellipsis right where the text cuts off.

Most basic text cutter tools just chop your paragraphs blindly. My string truncator is designed with pro-level options. You can trim text characters without breaking whole words, automatically fix broken HTML tags so your website design does not break, or protect important keywords from being chopped in half. Everything runs instantly right in your web browser, so your sensitive data never leaves your computer.

How to Use the Text Truncator Tool

  1. Paste your text: Start by typing or pasting your long content into the "Original Long Text" box at the top.
  2. Choose your limit: In the settings area, decide if you want to shorten text online by character count, word count, sentences, or lines. Then, type the exact number in the "Maximum Count" box.
  3. Select the direction: Pick where you want the cut to happen. You can remove the end, the beginning, or even the middle of your text.
  4. Protect your brand: If you have a specific keyword that you do not want the tool to cut in half, simply type it into the "Protect Keywords" box.
  5. Fix your formatting: You can choose to strip all HTML out, or you can keep your formatting. If you choose to keep it, the tool will automatically close any broken HTML tags at the end of your string truncator cut.
  6. Process and Save: Click the "Truncate Text Now" button. Once you see the result, use the Copy button to grab the text, the Download button to save a file, or the Share button to copy a link containing your exact settings.

Common Character Limits in 2025

If you are using this text ellipsis generator to trim your writing for social media or SEO, it helps to know exactly what numbers to type into the "Maximum Count" box. Here are the most updated character limits you should follow:

Platform / Use Case Maximum Character Limit
X (Twitter) Standard Post 280 characters
Instagram Bio Limit 150 characters
Google Meta Description 155 - 160 characters
YouTube Video Title 100 characters
TikTok Caption Limit 2,200 characters

Keep Formatting vs Clear Formatting

One of the most annoying things about basic text cutter tools is that they break your website layout. If your text contains a bold tag (like <b>), and the tool cuts the text before the tag closes, your entire page will turn bold!

This string truncator solves that problem completely. You have two options. You can use the "Clear Formatting" option to strip all HTML tags instantly. Or, you can use the "Keep & Auto-Close" option. If the limit cuts your text inside a bolded word or a paragraph, the tool will automatically generate the closing tags (like </b></p>) at the end of the line.

The Protect Keywords Feature

Sometimes when you shorten text online, you accidentally cut off your brand name or a keyword that you need for SEO. The Protect Keywords box fixes this. Simply type in the words you do not want to lose. If the cut limit lands anywhere near your protected word, the tool will automatically extend the cut to make sure your important word stays fully intact.
