What is the full form of a CD?

The full form of CD is Compact Disc. A compact disc or CD is a circular digital disc primarily used for data storage. It is compact, so it is very easy to carry. CD can store any information in digital format like video, audio, text, photograph, etc.

The data is stored on the disc in the form of small notches and when the disc is performed, the data is interpreted from the optical drive by a laser.

Notches are created on CDs with the help of a laser beam. The presence of the notch is indicated by "1" and the absence by "0".

A brief history of compact disc.

1. CD was first developed by two companies named Sony & Philips. CD was initially developed only for sound recording and storage.
2. Later as technology developed, it became possible to store collections of information on a CD. CD then came to be known as CD-ROM (Compact Disk-Read Only Memory).
3. The information stored in a CD only has the reading operation, not the writing process. Sony Company manufactures the first CD audio player in Japan.

Features of compact disc :-

A CD has the following features.

1. A standard compact disc (CD) has a diameter of about 120 millimeters (mm) and a width of about 1.2 millimeters (mm).
2. It is made entirely of plastic and has a shiny appearance.
3. It weighs only 15 to 20 grams.

Types of compact disc:

1. CD-ROM : Its full form is Compact Disc-Read Only Memory. It is a popular and standard optical disc used to read data in computers.
   We cannot erase the existing data. We have only one chance to write and read data for a lifetime. Hence it is called "read-only".
2. CD-R : The full form of CD-R is Recordable Compact Disc. CD-R has a shelf life of 20 to 100 years.
3. RW-CD : RW-CD stands for Rewritable Compact Disc. It is a disk in which data can be erased and rewritten.
4. VCD : The full form of VCD is Video Compact Disc. It helps us see a moving image clearly on the screen.

Advantages of compact disc are :-

1. It is small in size.
2. It is easy to carry.
3. It can store data for a long time.
4. Data can be accessed quickly.
5. It is cheap to manufacture.

Disadvantages of compact disc are :-

1. It has less storage capacity.
2. It can cause scratches if used quite frequently.
